Surviving the Query Process

For writers, querying is the stuff of dark legends whispered to children before bedtime. From the pressure to write a perfect letter to weathering a storm of rejections, it's the scary monster in the closet for scribblers and penmonkeys of every kind.

QueryShark for
Query advice.
For many, this is the point where "I am a writer" slowly withers into "I tried to be a writer." But does it have to be like that? Or is there a way to defeat it, maintain sanity and - dare I say it - even enjoy the process? I'm currently in the midst of querying my sci-fi novel The Year of Lightning, and this is how I stay happy.

1) Try your best to embrace it. Not with dread, sighs and dramatic eye-rolls, but with genuine enthusiasm. Since a writer aspiring to traditional publication must inevitably face the query, use it as a way to improve your craft. Writing a query letter can teach you how to present your story as succinctly and economically as possible, while still conveying your style and building suspense. Researching agents and agencies is a golden opportunity to learn more about the publishing business. Don't surrender to doom and gloom. Instead, make the process work for you.

2) Revel in your victory. If you're querying, that means you've competed a novel and edited/revised it, put it through beta reading and edited again, and given it the best final polish you can. Congratulations! You finished a novel - something the vast majority of aspiring novelists will never accomplish. You climbed a mountain and lived to tell the tale. So celebrate! Enjoy and take pride in your accomplishment, and that feeling will fuel you during the difficult days.

3) Accept rejection. It will happen. How many big-name actors got their huge breakout role after one audition? Approximately zero. Even if your work is brilliant, most agents will not want to represent it. And you know what? That's a good thing. You want to be represented by someone who does more than just enjoy your work. You want them to be blown away by it, to be so passionate that they will fight with every cell and every breath to get it into the hands of readers around the world. Have the patience to wait for that one agent who says, "You're amazing and we will do incredible things together." As for all the agents that reject you, be grateful to them for being honest and clearing the way for your true partner.

4) Allow yourself to feel bad. When your work is rejected, it's okay not to enjoy it. What's not okay is to wallow in it. That doesn't do anyone any good - especially yourself and the other writers who have to listen to it all day. So what do you do? When you receive a rejection, give yourself ten minutes to drown in misery and self-doubt. Let it wash over you. Let your heart sink, and envision a future where you aimlessly wander the streets, offering to write every stranger's memoir for a nickel and a ham sandwich. Once your ten minutes are done, pick up your heart, dust it off and charge forward with renewed determination. Rejection never feels good, so don't bottle or repress it. Open up, let the darkness flow from you, and then all that remains will be the light.

5) Surround yourself with peers who know what you're going through. There's an immense amount of comfort in knowing that you can message a friend with "Ugh, querying" and they'll respond with, "I know! But don't give up." Share yourself and your experiences, and offer your own support to others going through the same thing. A sense of community, of not being alone, can work wonders.

6) Stay productive. Don't spend all your time querying and waiting on responses. Keep writing. Not only will this keep your mind occupied and prevent you from checking email every three minutes, but it will serve to remind you why you're doing all this. While the business side works itself out, keep doing what you love. Who knows, that story you're writing to distract yourself may end up being exactly what publishers are looking for.

I hope this helps. Now, suit up and get writing!

The Typelings Talk - IV

Last intro post, friends! Today we're introducing a few more awesome Typelings, in the hope that you'll REALLY LIKE THEM!

For your enjoyment, let us begin...

Batman
Batman

1. What is your favorite thing to do besides read or write?

First, I’m a foodie, so I enjoy cooking, trying new restaurants and watching Food Network. Second, I trained in musical theater for a few years, so I try to practice singing regularly. Third, I prowl the rooftops at night and bring justice to the criminal underworld. Don’t tell anyone about the third one.

2. What is your favorite genre of literature, if you have one?
I don’t think I can pick just one. I read sci-fi, fantasy, humor, contemporary, children’s and grown-up, classic literature – everything from Shakespeare, Austen, Dumas and Poe to Brandon Sanderson, Ernest Cline, Jeffrey Deaver and Douglas Adams. I’ll read just about anything that catches my interest. There’s something to learn about writing from each, and I enjoy them equally.

3. Do you have a favorite book or series of books? If so what?
The Count of Monte Cristo is my absolute favorite book. Dumas was a master at building to moments of incredible emotional intensity. It’s a long book, but the payoff is more than worth it.

4. Which do you prefer, reading or writing?
Wow. That’s like asking if I prefer inhaling or exhaling. They’re two halves of the same coin and I don’t really know how to separate them. I love books, whether I’m reading or writing them.

5. What do you love most about literature?
When I’m reading, I love escaping into stories and feeling a kinship with the characters I’m reading about. I love books that make me want to jump up and cheer. When I’m writing, the freedom of creating any world or character that I want, the satisfaction of inspiring emotion in my readers and taking them on a journey with me, is incredibly satisfying.

6. What is your favorite color?
Silver and dark purple

7. What is your favorite food?
I’m Italian, so I have to pick that or I’ll get in trouble with my mom. Seriously, though, nothing beats the comfort of my generations-old family recipes that came over on the boat from Sicily. After that, Thai food all the way.

8. What is your favorite type of music?
I have something of everything, so it just depends on what mood I’m in. I suppose I’ve loved rock and Broadway music the longest, and yeah, those choices couldn’t be more different from each other! When I’m writing I mostly listen to super-chill relaxation music, more for insulating myself within the story than for entertainment. I also listen to a ton of comedy.

9. Chocolate or chips? (Sweet or salty?)
Chocolate chips? Chips dipped in chocolate? I pick sweet AND salty because I’m a rebel like that and don’t follow the rules of civilized society.

10. How do you eat an Oreo?
Mercilessly and with reckless abandon, as if I’m wreaking vengeance upon the cookie community for atrocities committed against my people.

Next up: Lady!

1. What is your favorite thing to do besides read and write?
I love to sing and play the piano.

2. What is your favorite genre of literature, if you have one?
My favorite is historical fiction, but science fiction (Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut) holds a special place in my heart.

3. Do you have a favorite book or series of books? If so, what?
"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society". If you have never read it, YOU HAVE TO! It is beautifully written!

4. Which do you prefer, reading or writing?
I would much rather sit down and write. I'm a visual person and writing allows me to see the effort I'm putting into it.

5. What do yo ulove most about literature?
I love that there is always something to learn or absorb. I love a good romance to lift my spirits, a science fiction novel to get me thinking and a biography to appreciate those who came before me.

6. What is your favorite color?
Happy red, not Scorsese red.

7. What is your favorite food?
Homemade Caesar Salad. I could eat that every week!

8. What is your favorite type of music?
I like too many to narrow it down, but I love 40s/50s crooners and jive.

9. Chocolate or chips? (Sweet or salty?)
M&M popcorn does that answer your question? * winking *

10. How do you eat an Oreo?
I eat my Oreos just like Hero, except I drink half of my milk after two Oreos, then continue the process for the other two and finish off the milk, that way I'm not stuck with a ton of milk after scarfing down my Oreos.

Another friend you'll hear from is our one-and-only-honorary-out-of-state member, code named Pinnochio. He's been a member of a couple of group blogs in the past, so we're using his expertise to get this thing going  and make sure we're all happy and having fun at the same time. We'll probably hear his interview answers the first time he posts here :-)

There they are! And now you know ALL of us. Keep your eyes open for more posts from the other Typelings coming soon!

The Typelings Talk - III

Wow, what a week, eh! Today we're introducing you to the next two Typelings. As of right now there  are only two more after this... but apparently we're popular, so we may get to meet more as the blog grows!

Today, we have a couple of legendary figures: Rogue and Ozz.

Rogue
Rogue

1. What is your favorite thing to do besides read or write?

I like to stare at my bookcases. If I'm not doing that, I'm probably watching Doctor Who. Or Robin Hood. Or Peter Pan. Or LotR. Or Harry Potter. Occasionally I sleep.

2. What is your favorite genre of literature, if you have one?
I mostly like fantasy and horror books, but I will read pretty much anything. Sci-fi, mystery/thriller, general fiction, just as long as it's good! My favorite authors are Tolkien and Rowling (of course), along with Dean Koontz, Rick Riordan, Charles Dickens, and a lot more I could probably think of if I wasn't so tired.

3. Do you have a favorite book or series of books? If so what?
Where to start? I love the usual favorites, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and the like. I also love Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas series, anything to do with Peter Pan or Robin Hood or Spider-Man, and pretty much anything Rick Riordan has put out.

4. Which do you prefer, reading or writing?
I like to read books that inspire me to write. I will literally read a few pages or chapters of a book, write for a while, read some more, write some more, and then watch Doctor Who.

5. What do you love most about literature?
Literature is lasting. It reaches individual people in unique ways, spanning generations. Good literature endures to be loved for ages.

6. What is your favorite color?
Burnt orange.

7. What is your favorite food?
Pizza.

8. What is your favorite type of music?
Epic music, movie soundtracks, classic rock, Celtic music, a smattering of Indie bands, I'm not too picky.

9. Chocolate or chips? (Sweet or salty?)
I interpreted that as chocolate or chips...as in french fries. My soul is British. Anyway...chocolate, every time. Unless you mean chips as in french fries, because then I would eat both at once.

10. How do you eat an Oreo?
If I'm eating one in public, I stuff that entire delicious cookie in my mouth at once, to avoid black crumbs getting all up in my grill. At home, I dip them in milk and eat them in three to four bites, rotating the cookie widdershins after each nibble.

Next up: Ozz!

Ozz
Ozz

1. What is your favorite thing to do besides read or write?
Well, I jump between singing and team sports, unfortunately those teams sports aren't played here, like netball, rugby and European handball. (Yes, I did play violent sports. I had a lot of rage as a teen)

2. What is your favorite genre of literature, if you have one?
Hmm... I like anything as long as it has good strong characters... I hate Bella... But I can't read zombies, horror and thrillers.

3. Do you have a favorite book or series of books? If so what?
There was a book I read over and over in HS which I loved, but I can't remember it's name, only where it was located in the school library! But I do love 'The Fire of the Covenant', and a MG series called 'Horrible Histories' they just crack me up.

4. Which do you prefer, reading or writing?
Writing. I'm in my head all the time... it's quite bad actually.

5. What do you love most about literature?
MOST?? Geez... probably the escapism. I love getting away to another world.

6. What is your favorite color?
Purple, no blue, no purple, no... yes! Purple. Plum purple.

7. What is your favorite food?
Ice Cream!

8. What is your favorite type of music?
Club/Dance

9. Chocolate or chips? (Sweet or salty?)
Chocolate big time!

10. How do you eat an Oreo?
As fast as possible! Forget pulling it apart!

The Typelings Talk - II

WooHoo! Thanks for all the love on Monday for Hero and Gray! They appreciate it so very much. Moving on in the introductions, today we're going to meet the amazing Dash and Page... without further adoooo.....

Dash
Dash

1. What is your favorite thing to do besides read or write?
Act! Like a fool! Onstage!

2. What is your favorite genre of literature, if you have one?
Fiction...pretty broad I know, but I can't narrow it down any further. I love everything!

3. Do you have a favorite book or series of books? If so what?
Harry Potter. Obviously. However I am very partial to anything Agatha Christie writes.

4. Which do you prefer, reading or writing?
Well, since I am not gifted with the power of the written word like my fellow Typelings, I'd definitely say reading. Although I have written quite a few of my own Harry Potter jokes: knock knock! who's there? you know! you know who? AVADA KEDAVRA!......eh??

5. What do you love most about literature?
Escapism. Definitely. And witnessing a complex string of events and characters resolve into a logical plot. Of course, not all authors can pull this off. But all the ones I know personally can.

6. What is your favorite color?
Pink. Don't judge.

7. What is your favorite food?
Cookies. Judge.

8. What is your favorite type of music?
New Orleans Jazz. So so much.

9. Chocolate or chips? (Sweet or salty?)
Chocolate dipped chips...don't knock it til you've tried it!

10. How do you eat an Oreo?
Greedily.

(Side note, her joke had me laughing so bad.)

Page
Page
(aka the person who's been putting these posts together. FUN!)

1. What is your favorite thing to do besides read or write?
Sing, dance, act (but not usually like a fool), or teach any of those things.

2. What is your favorite genre of literature, if you have one?
Fantasy. Hands down.

3. Do you have a favorite book or series of books? If so what?
The Belgariad and Mallorean Series by David Eddings, Harry Potter, Dearly Departed (which I'm about to read the sequel for - Dearly Beloved), and so many of my CP's manuscripts.

4. Which do you prefer, reading or writing?
I don't think I can choose (which makes my asking this question of the others a real dumb idea). Reading is definitely easier for me, but part of why I love writing is that it's a challenge. Both are exciting for me.

5. What do you love most about literature?
Comfort. Reading a good book - or writing one - is not only an escape, but it fires my imagination too, stretches my mind, and, hopefully, teaches me a lesson. All of that is a comfort to me. Call it nostalgic, sentimental... it's comfortable.

6. What is your favorite color?
Blue. Royal blue.

7. What is your favorite food?
Pizza. For a while during my last pregnancy it made me sick... it was torture.

8. What is your favorite type of music?
Honestly? Anything clean. And by clean I mean free of swearing.

9. Chocolate or chips? (Sweet or salty?)
Both (which seems to be a trend among the Typelings...)

10. How do you eat an Oreo?

All at once. I'm way too impatient for anything else.

******

Sweet! Now give us some love here, and stay tuned for the next intro post coming soon, to meet Rogue, Oz and Batman!

The Typelings Talk - I

Hello readers!

We are the Typelings. A group of friends from AZ who love to read, write, and discuss our various creative endeavors. We're going to take this week to introduce ourselves! Hopefully you'll spread the word as we get going on posts and such, so that we can have lots of friends come hang out here on the blog!

The Original Four
It all started a year ago... *cue flashback music*

Page and Hero were already friends, and Dash and Gray were already friends. Then Dash and Page became "bloggy buddies," and Page found out through Dash that Gray had self-published a novel, and asked if she (Page) could interview her (Gray). Said interview happened, and a week later the four got together for the first time, to chat books and publishing (among other girly stuff. Because that's what girls do).

Thus, the Typelings were born. And the rest is history.

Two months ago, Rogue was added to the bunch, and not three days prior to this post a sixth writer joined the group... but we're still working on her code name... *evil laughter* and ANOTHER will likely be added before this week is up... you shall be kept informed.

Today we'd like to introduce to you Hero and Gray.

Hero
First up: Hero
(Follow on Twitter @herolondon)

1. What is your favorite thing to do besides read or write?

I love to create. Crafts, painting, making movies, sewing, refurbishing an ugly piece of furniture into something fabulous-- I love it all. I also love to read and hang out with my family.

2. What is your favorite genre of literature, if you have one?
I'm not sure what my favorite genre is right now. I used to be way into YA fantasy, which I still am (Shout out to Page and Rogue!), but it's slowed down a bit. YA Paranormal is fun. (Shout out to Gray!) I also love anything Austenian or Regency.

3. Do you have a favorite book or series of books? If so what?
If the question is about which book/series I obsess over the most, then the answer is the ultimate of ultimates: Harry Potter.

4. Which do you prefer, reading or writing?
I just love words. I love escaping. I love descriptions that carry me off, make me sigh, or pound my heart. And I love characters. It's the grown-up version of having imaginary friends.

5. What do you love most about literature?
It depends on the mood. Reading is relaxing. Writing is creating. I get my lazy fix with one and my "playing god" fix with the other. Either way, it's hanging out with characters I love or love to hate (see #4)

6. What is your favorite color?
Tiffany Blue

7. What is your favorite food?
Chocolate. And almond butter. Or chocolate and almond butter. Depends on the punctuation or craving.

8. What is your favorite type of music?
I've taken to listening to Tim Burton style soundtracks while writing (Edward Scissorhands...sigh. Danny Elfman, you're a genius!)

9. Chocolate or chips? (Sweet or salty?)
Um... see #7

10. How do you eat an Oreo?
Oh, this is a very important process. First, I dip the Oreo in milk for a few seconds. Then I eat the milk-soaked part. Then I dip again. Eat milk-soaked part. Repeat until Oreo is consumed. Then I take a sip of milk to cleanse the palate before moving on to the next Oreo.

Gray
Next up: Gray
(Follow on Twitter @BritneyJensen)

1. What is your favorite thing to do besides read or write?
My favorite things to do besides read or write would be running (when I'm not 8 months pregnant), and vacationing.  Escapism much?

2. What is your favorite genre of literature, if you have one?
I like a lot of literary genres, mostly fiction.  But, I always find myself gravitating more towards science fiction and drama, and I occasionally like to scare myself with a good horror novel.

3. Do you have a favorite book or series of books? If so what?
I've narrowed my favorite books down to three, which seemed like a hard task until I looked at the state these three books are in.  I've read each half a dozen times at least and they are all on the verge of disintegrating.  They are: Boys' Life, by Robert McCammon; Something Wicked This Way Comes, by Ray Bradbury; and One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.  I'd be a fool not to also say that among my favorites are Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, both by Orson Scott Card.

4. Which do you prefer, reading or writing?
I prefer reading over writing any day of the week.  Aaaand I'm not even going to try to dissect why.  Let's just move on.

5. What do you love most about literature?
There are so many things I love about literature, but mostly that it gives you the opportunity to travel, to live in different times, to live in someone's head, to experience things you otherwise never would.  Literature takes you places and tells you things.  It teaches you how to understand situations and the people experiencing them.  It gives you depth and character and empathy.

6. What is your favorite color?
My favorite color is green.

7. What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is Eggs Benedict.  But really, I'm happy with most breakfast foods.

8. What is your favorite type of music?
My favorite type of music is Indie Rock - a la Metric and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's.  Let's all support indie artists!

9. Chocolate or chips? (Sweet or salty?)
Great question.  My life is one big balancing act of the two.  If I have chocolate, I must then eat chips to balance it out and vice versa.  It's a vicious, never-ending cycle.

10. How do you eat an Oreo?
I twist the Oreo open, eat the center first, then dip the cookies in milk and finish it off. Is there another way to do it?

There you have 'em folks! The first two members of the Tyepelings out there for your viewing/approval/judgement/love. Give them lots of love and leave a comment saying HELLO!
